There’s a Rainbow in my Basement!

And, yes, I know that green is missing. I washed all of the fabric for The Quilt, and only the green ran. So it was having an extra soak when this photo was taken. Actually it soaked in multiple changes of cold water for several days, including an overnight soak in salt water, and it is still running. Does anyone have any suggestions? Marty??  I can’t wait to start cutting and creating strip sets so I can start piecing, but obviously I have to solve the running problem first.

Looks great! Sorry I don’t have any good ideas for what to do about the running green.

Retayne is a commercial product which claims to help set dyes in commercially dyed fabric. I don’t really know how well it works. I’ve used it but I’ve never done a scientific test.

Synthropol is a detergent dyers use to scour fabric before dyeing and to help remove excess dye after dyeing.

Sometimes the bleeding is just excess dye that didn’t get washed out in the dyeing process. Other times, the dye is not set properly. Use that fabric at your own peril.

Do I recall correctly that the green was the variegated fabric? In that case, my first guess would be excess dye. I’d try washing it several times in hot water and Synthropol. If it continues to run after that, I’d start looking for another fabric.
