I’ve been working on the appliqué leaves and flowers for my log cabin basket. Here’s a look at this week’s progress:

Here’s my second scrappy orange heart. Now I’m working on turning it and the other hearts into reversible orange and yellow heart bibs for two little girls who will start eating solid foods in a month or so.

Log Cabin Basket with Handle

Here is a look at my log cabin basket with its appliqué handle. I haven’t connected the three log cabin blocks that form the basket, but you still get a pretty good sense of how it will look.

The next task is to appliqué the flower stems and leaves.

The directions said to use 5/8″ bias strips for the stems. It had been a while since I had made bias stems, so I had to look up how to do them, but it went quickly. I got to use one of the pressing bars from a set given to me by one of the Quilting Ladies for the first time. It worked very well!

Orange Fabric Strips

These 1 1/2″ orange strips are waiting until it’s cooler to be pressed and turned into a scrap heart like these

When that’s done, I’ll have 2 yellow and 2 orange hearts that I plan to sew into reversible bibs for Mira and Audra. They’ve just turned 4 months old, and their mom is looking forward to trying solid food around 6 months. I wish I could say I had planned the bibs to be yellow and orange like their quilts, but actually I just found the backing fabric in my stash and decided yellow and orange hearts would look good with it. Then, after I had made the first three hearts, I had to decide what to do with them, and baby bibs seemed like a good idea. So, that worked out well!

Here’s a look at the finished binding for my Card Trick Lap Quilt. I finished sewing the binding on at the Quilting Ladies on Wednesday. Now I just have to remove the basting tacks.

Choosing Colors

I’m working on choosing colors for the flowers in my Log Cabin Basket block. Here are some of the possibilities I found among my scraps. I’m going to make the flowers orange and yellow to match the towels in our half bathroom – you can see one in the top right hand corner of the picture. I need some bigger pieces of green for the stems, so I think I’ll need to go into my stash for that. Decisions, decisions…

Paper Pieced Log Cabin Blocks

I’m about halfway done hand-sewing the binding to the back of my Card Trick Lap Quilt, working while watching the Olympics. After finishing piecing the Crackpotty Backing for the Round Robin Quilt, I’ve been making these three paper pieced log cabin blocks. They form a flower basket for a 14″ block I found in one of the quilting magazines Marty brought to All Together Week. The rest of the block is appliqué, and I hope to make it into a wall hanging for our downstairs half bathroom.

First Cuts

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

by Ann

So who needs green? I have decided to start in a corner of the quilt that uses red, orange, purple, and blue, so I can get started before I figure out what to do about my running green fabric. And I am very eager to get started! So here are my first two strips of red. I’m making sure my rotary cutting is very accurate. Oh boy!

Scrappy Hearts

Here are three scrappy hearts I made a little while ago, really just to try out a pattern I’d found and to do a little fun piecing without any real plan after I’d finished Helene’s quilt. I really like how they look! Now I have to figure out what to do with them. Right now I’m considering turning them into bibs for Mira and Audra, or possibly making a few more and turning them into a Project Linus quilt.

Also, in the background you can see the binding for my Card Trick Lap Quilt. I’ve machine sewed it to the quilt and am now working on hand sewing it to the back.
